From a Passion for Woodworking to Black Forest Sawmill
Black Forest Sawmill was founded in 2015 by Sean Black and has grown into a family-owned sawmill, retail hardwood store and woodworking shop serving customers throughout Virginia and beyond.
Today, we offer kiln-dried live edge slabs, hardwood lumber, project-ready wood, handcrafted pieces and custom furniture from our shop in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.
It Started Long Before the Sawmill
Sean's interest in woodworking began around age 12, building furniture alongside his grandfather. That interest continued through high school, where agriculture and woodworking teachers helped deepen his appreciation for working with wood and understanding where it comes from.
He later graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Forest Resource Management and Wildlife Biology. Decades of experience in timber management, logging, forestry and sawmilling helped shape the knowledge behind Black Forest Sawmill today.
What began with a Wood-Mizer LT40 sawmill eventually grew into a business specializing in unique hardwood slabs and lumber, and later expanded into custom woodworking and furniture.
We Work With the Wood Through the Entire Process
Black Forest Sawmill is more than a place to buy lumber. We work with hardwoods from the sawmill through kiln drying, retail inventory and finished woodworking.
That gives us a unique connection to the material and access to unusual slabs, figured hardwoods and one-of-a-kind pieces that aren't typically available through a conventional lumber or furniture store.
Our facility in Crimora brings together a large inventory of kiln-dried hardwoods, our retail showroom and our woodworking shop.
Customers can browse live edge slabs, hardwood lumber, DIY bundles, charcuterie board stock and finished pieces while seeing firsthand the variety of wood that comes through our operation.
Our inventory is constantly changing because every log, slab and board has its own grain, figure and natural character.

Our retail showroom and woodworking shop are located in Crimora, Virginia, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley.
We serve woodworkers, homeowners and businesses throughout the Shenandoah Valley and across Virginia, including Charlottesville, Richmond and Northern Virginia.
Because our retail hours can vary depending on sawmill and production schedules, we recommend calling or texting before making a special trip.
